Why Is My House So Hot When It’s Cold Outside?
When the temperature drops outside, you would expect your home to be at risk of being too cold rather than too hot — yet many homeowners experience the exact opposite. Today, we’ll look at a few reasons that your home might have excessively hot rooms when the heat comes on, end up way too hot when it’s a little bit chilly outside and the furnace isn’t on yet, and more.

Poor Insulation
Insulation issues are a common source of inappropriate temperatures no matter the season. Your home might have inadequate insulation in certain rooms, resulting in other rooms being too hot at the same time other rooms are too cold.
If you have uninsulated ducts or notice rooms are wildly different temperatures, with some draftier, damper, etc., consider upgrading your insulation to resolve the issue.
Ductwork Issue
Aside from poor insulation on your ducts, the design or state of your ductwork could also be the problem. If your ducts were poorly balanced when installed, then some rooms may receive more heat than they need while others don’t receive enough.
If you notice that your ducts aren’t blowing very hard in the coldest rooms of your house, while in the hottest rooms, you have a strong stream of hot air, this is likely the issue. Solving it could be as simple as duct cleaning or might involve sealing leaking ducts or replacing your ductwork entirely.
Closed Vents
It might feel like something you would have noticed, but it’s easy to overlook the little details. If you have ducts in cold rooms with closed vents, that forces more hot air out of the vents in other parts of your home. If a room has multiple vents, this can even cause hot and cold spots within a single room.
Fortunately, this is an easy fix if your vents aren’t damaged or rusted shut, as you can simply open the vent in question.
Clogged Air Filter
Clogged filters can result in issues and poor performance from your HVAC system at any time of year. Your home might heat up with a clogged air filter because slower airflow causes air to become too hot before flowing into occupied parts of your home.
If it’s just a little cool outside, you might decide not to run the AC, instead relying on the system’s fan mode to keep air circulating so the heat from electronic devices, people, and pets. If this is the case, and your system is blowing hot air, a clogged filter could be the culprit.
Luckily, this is another easy one to resolve. Replace disposable filters and clean permanent filters, then remember to clean or replace them every one to three months.
Thermostat Issue
Sometimes, the trouble comes from your thermostat. If you set your home to a reasonable temperature but the thermostat never seems to cut the heat off, it could be an issue of calibration, trouble with the connection between your thermostat and your system, or an issue with the location of your thermostat.
Consider whether your thermostat never seems to adjust its readout as quickly as the temperature changes in other places, if it ignores your settings and keeps the heat on long after it should shut it off, and if you’ve noticed other problems like a dim display or refusing the switch between heat, fan, and air conditioning.
An HVAC professional is usually best left to handle thermostat issues more complicated than changing the batteries. Routine maintenance can also help avoid these issues in the future, as tune-ups include assessing and calibrating your thermostat.
