How To Clean Your Electrostatic Air Filter

Electrostatic air filters are a great choice for maintaining the air quality in your home while helping your HVAC system run efficiently. These reusable filters allow for better airflow, reducing strain on your HVAC system. They have high MERV ratings (8-16), effectively removing microscopic pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and smoke particles. Plus, they are environmentally friendly due to less waste.

Even these hardworking filters need to be cleaned. Here’s how to take care of your electrostatic filter so it lasts for years.

How Does an Electrostatic Filter Work?

An electrostatic air filter charges metal filters with static electricity as air flows through them. When dust and bacteria pass through the filter, they become pulled into the static current and stick to it. These particles remain stuck to the filter when you clean it. This process keeps the air circulating in your home, which is cleaner and healthier.

Cleaning Your Electrostatic Filter

Cleaning your electrostatic air filter is straightforward and requires only a garden hose and some dishwashing soap. Follow these steps to ensure your filter is clean and your HVAC system functions efficiently:

  • Step #1: Turn off the power to your HVAC system.
  • Step #2: Remove your electrostatic air filter.
  • Step #3: Note the arrow that indicates the airflow direction; you’ll want to clean from the opposite side first, then with the direction of the airflow.
  • Step #4: Prop the air filter against an outdoor wall and use a high-pressured water hose* to clean through side one.
  • Step #5: Flip the air filter and spray down the filter from the side with the direction of the airflow.
  • Step #6: Repeat steps 4 & 5.
  • Step #7: If your filter is still dirty after several passes with the hose, try mixing water and dishwashing detergent and applying it to the filter from both sides, then wait 10 minutes and try hosing it down again.
  • Step #8: Allow your clean electrostatic air filter to dry completely before reinstalling it.
  • Step #9: Re-install your electrostatic air filter before you power your HVAC system back on.

Remember: A power washer is too powerful to clean these filters and could cause damage.

Regular HVAC Maintenance

Regular professional HVAC maintenance is important, even if you clean your filters. Professional maintenance includes more than just checking your air filters — our experts inspect and service your entire HVAC system to keep it operating efficiently and last as long as possible.

Clean filters and scheduled maintenance help extend the lifespan of your HVAC unit and improve efficiency. While you need clean filters for airflow, other energy-efficiency solutions like smart thermostats and air duct cleaning are also critical. Regular maintenance ensures all components of your system are in good condition.

One of the owners of the company took the time to work with us to ensure that we had the product that worked best for us. Working with this company reminds us of the customer service that was provided before companies started to outsource portions of their operations.
