Where Is My Air Filter Located, and Do I Have More than One Air Filter?
The air filter is an integral component of any heating or cooling system. It works to remove contaminants circulating in the air within your home, leaving you with cleaner air and a cleaner home! Air filters need to be changed regularly, as they do become clogged with the contaminants they pull from the air. Typically, this should be done once every three months, or according to the specifications of the filter manufacturer. If you are using a cheap, disposable filter with a low MERV rating, or during periods of heavy HVAC system use, you may find it necessary to change the air filter more frequently.
Where is my air filter located?
Your HVAC system’s air filter will be located up flow (in the direction air is flowing) from the furnace. The filter chamber is usually within the air handler component of your HVAC system. The filter chamber may be an attached filter case indicated from the outside of the chamber, but in some cases, it appears as just a slot.
To change the air filter, simply remove it and replace it with one of the same size. Make sure to insert the filter appropriately so that airflow is not hindered. The filter should have markings on it to show you which way it should be inserted.
Some homes utilize reusable filters. Instead of replacing them, they are cleaned of debris and replaced. Follow the cleaning directions outlined by the manufacturer and make sure the filter is completely dry before reinserting.
Do I have more than one air filter?
Most systems have a single filter. Some may utilize filters for return air. These will be attached directly to the return air grill in your home. In this case, you may have a filter here as well as one located in the air handler.
If your heating and cooling systems work with a whole-home air purifier or air cleaner which uses a filter, such as a HEPA air purifier or electrostatic air purifier, you may have an additional filter. These filters may require changing or cleaning periodically, depending on the system.
If you have questions about locating your air filter, it is best to consult with a qualified HVAC technician. They will be able to advise you how frequently to change your air filter, and what type of air filter is right for your home.
