Why Is My Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air?

It can be frustrating and uncomfortable if your heat pump starts blowing cold air on a chilly day. However, there’s no need to panic right away — there are a few reasons why your heat pump might be blowing cool air that have nothing to do with a malfunction. With some simple troubleshooting, you may be able to identify and resolve the issue on your own.

Reasons Your Unit Could Be Blowing Cold Air in Heat Mode

If you feel cold air coming from your heat pump when you’ve set it to heat, there are a few possible explanations:

  1. It’s actually blowing warm air: Heat pumps can feel quite different if you’re used to heat from a furnace. While furnaces provide powerful bursts of heat, heat pumps are more of the “slow and steady” type. This is part of what makes them so efficient. Typically, the air from a heat pump will feel warm rather than hot, measuring between 85 and 90 degrees, which can feel cooler compared to your 98.6-degree body temperature. If you think this may be the case, give your heat pump time to do its job. Check your thermostat’s temperature reading every 30 minutes after turning up the heat. You should see the room temperature increase to the set number in about an hour.
  2. It’s defrosting: Heat pumps will enter defrost mode to prevent ice from building up on the outdoor unit. This mode temporarily makes the system blow cool air, like an air conditioner, until the ice is melted.
  3. There’s a faulty part: Components like refrigerant lines or the reversing valve might be malfunctioning. Leaks or mechanical failures in these parts will affect the heat pump’s ability to heat properly.

Troubleshooting Your Heat Pump

Before you call for professional help, here are a few simple checks you can perform:

  • Change the filters: Dirty filters can restrict airflow and reduce heating efficiency.
  • Check the outdoor unit: Make sure it’s free from debris, such as leaves, overgrown plants, trash, or anything else that could obstruct the heat exchange process.
  • Check indoor vents: Are they blocked in any way? Furniture or drapes covering vents can restrict airflow.
  • Check for refrigerant leaks: Oily residue around the heat pump connections might indicate a leak.
  • Check your thermostat settings: Ensure that the thermostat is set to “AUTO” and not “ON,” which can cause the fan to blow unheated air continuously.

One of the owners of the company took the time to work with us to ensure that we had the product that worked best for us. Working with this company reminds us of the customer service that was provided before companies started to outsource portions of their operations. Great praise to Parkers for everything that they do...
